Deontay Wilder has once again showed his trademark knockout power, but his heavyweight rival, Tyson Fury, is not impressed.
On Saturday night, the reigning WBC heavyweight titlist turned back Ortiz’s gallant stand after knocking him out in their rematch in Las Vegas.
The Cuban powerhouse had the early rounds on his bag but the power hitter from Alabama landed a massive right hand in the seventh frame to secure the knockout win.
Wilder admitted that he struggled against the crafty Ortiz in the early goings but it didn’t matter as the defending champ said he ‘only needed to be perfect for two seconds.’
“I had to play around with him and measure him in certain places. I had to go back and go forward.” he shared on the post-fight press conference, per CBS Sports.
“My intellect is very high although I don’t get credit for it. I finally found my measurement and I took the shot and I hurt him.”
Onto The Next
It was Wilder’s tenth straight successful title-defence, which sets him up to a much-awaited showdown with ‘The Gypsy King’ in a re-run of their December 2018 heavyweight classic.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ confirmed that the rematch with Fury will go down on February 2020.
Wilder said the rematch would be bigger than their first meeting and vowed to finish Fury ‘like I did the first time.’
“Next, of course, we have the rematch with Tyson Fury.”
“The schedule is set to be done in February so we will see how that goes.”
“After that, I’m looking for a unification bout. I want one champion, one face and one name and he go by the name of Deontay Wilder.”
“They have to be perfect for 12 rounds, I only have to be perfect for two seconds.”
No Chance
Wilder and Fury’s first heavyweight clash ended in a controversial split draw.
The British star rose back from the dead in an Undertaker like fashion and beat the count after Wilder dropped him in the final round with a right-left combo.
Up to this day, ‘The Gypsy King’ believes he did enough to outpoint Wilder.
Since that questionable result, Fury has won two straight fights, beating Tom Schwarz last June before surviving Otto Wallin in a September barnburner.
For his rematch with Wilder, the lineal heavyweight champion is confident it would not be as tough as the first fight.
Following Wilder’s finish of Ortiz, Fury took to Twitter and said he will bring the American to school in their rematch.
“Wilder has nothing more than a punchers chance vs me, I’m gonna school even more than the first fight. #BUMCITY”
