McGregor and Cerrone will headline the promotion’s first pay-per-view event next year, which is set to take place at the T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas on January 18.
Looking to score his first MMA win in three years, ‘The Notorious’ will try to bounce back from his fourth round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The announcement came as a surprise to some MMA fans as they are anticipating McGregor to compete at 155 pounds in a bid to secure another shot at the Russian champion.
Some of his rabid followers, though, are excited for his journey at welterweight as his presence could create more exciting matchups against the likes of Kamaru Usman, Colby Covington, Nate Diaz, Tyron Woodley, and Jorge Masvidal.
Check out some of the craziest reactions from the Twitter-verse on McGregor’s upcoming welterweight fight against Cerrone:
Conor McGregor at Welterweight just makes the 170 class so much fucking better, as if it wasn’t stacked before. @danawhite this is the year to really plant the UFC into everybody’s hearts, so much potential!!

Conor McGregor vs Donald Cerrone on Jan. 18 in Las Vegas. I'm suprised the fight is at welterweight. I expect Conor to put the pressure on early as always, but man that is dangerous against a guy like Cerrone. Super interesting match up and a fight that makes sense for both.

Watch out for Conor calling out the winner of Colby/Usman for the welterweight title. Triple champ @TheNotoriousMMA #UFC246

I love the criticism of Conor. He’s a champ at featherweight, lw , and now fighting a legitimate guy at welterweight and people are calling him soft for taking an easy fight. He’s not a welterweight imo. Nothing is easy for him at that weight. Props for going 4 it. #ConorMcGregor
