World Wrestling Entertainment superstar Rey Mysterio is set to retire from the sport in a special ceremony at next week’s WWE Raw.
The wrestling fan-favourite, whose real name is Oscar Gutierrez and is known for his iconic 619, suffered an eye injury in a match against Seth Rollins last May 11, which sparked speculations that he may never compete again.
According to multiple reports, Mysterio is expected to renew his contract with the WWE, which could set him up to another match with Rollins, but no deal has been made yet and the latter is slated to face Aleister Black in the next edition of WWE Raw.
On Wednesday, it was confirmed by WWE that the wrestling legend has called it a career and the official retirement will be featured next week, with Rollins serving as the ceremony’s host.
“BREAKING: Next week on #WWERaw, @reymysterio will have his retirement ceremony,” WWE announced on Twitter.

Incomparable
The Master of 619 told Wrestlezone in a previous interview that “there’s no other rush or it’s almost like a drug with the passion I have for this sport.”
He added: “Ever since I was a kid, this always motivated me to do what I do. A lot of people go to work miserably; they don’t want to be there, they get paid poorly, they’re there eight hours or sometimes more.”
“For me, I get to travel around the world. I get paid good money but on top of that, I get this adrenaline rush every time I step in the ring that’s incomparable to anything.”
He has also expressed his interest in sharing the ring with his son, Dominick, before calling it quits.
“I want to have the opportunity to share the ring with him before I at least make an announcement to retire. I think that’s probably the last check on my bucket list, to be able to step in the ring with my son and be next to him when he’s feeling what I’m feeling for the last thirty years.”
