Colby Covington saw his winning streak in the welterweight division come to an end last Saturday and his former friend, Jorge Masvidal, had something to say about his defeat.
The American mixed martial artist challenged Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title at UFC 245 headliner, in what he considered as the biggest fight for American Top Team.
After going back and forth in the first four rounds, with Covington leading the scorecards, the defending champion turned the tables around and finished his challenger with a ground and pound.
‘Chaos’ believes the stoppage was called early and has since slammed the referee, Marc Goddard, for robbing him of the opportunity to kill or be killed in Las Vegas.
With Covington suffering a painful loss, Masvidal did not waste the chance to rub salts into his enemy’s wounds.
Shots Fired
‘Gamebred,’ who has been in a war of words with Covington earlier this week, took to Twitter and reacted to his former teammate’s fifth-round TKO loss to Usman.
“They say never kick a man when he is down but you not a man. Should’ve paid my coach, it’s cheaper than getting your jaw wired shut.”
The Miami, Florida native has accused Covington of failing to pay his coach, who worked with him ahead of his fight with Rafael Dos Anjos last year.
In a previous appearance at the Dan LeBatard Show, Masvidal claimed “We were [friends] until he ripped off my coach and since then I ain’t talked to him.”
“He’s mad because people don’t care to see him fight. They want to see him lose.”
“That’s what they tune into. He does this whole heel thing because he couldn’t get people to regularly watch his fights so then he said if I go over the top, create this persona, people will hate me, then people will tune in.”
Coward
Masvidal continued, “People do tune in but it’s not as much as he would want and you can tell by the way that he’s talking. Bringing up chicks.”
“Why do you kiss and tell? Were you not raised by gentlemen? Who cares if you are or not banging chicks. Who cares? What the hell?”
In a follow up tweet, Masvidal slammed Covington for making excuses after the loss, calling him a coward, who tucks his tail.
”Shout out to Ben Askren, who never tucked tail after his loss. Made no excuses. Took it on the chin and never censored the haters like a coward.”
