Former Ultimate Fighting Championship two-division champion Henry Cejudo has promised to make the flyweight class ‘great again.’
Talks about the 125-pound division potentially getting scrapped loomed recently, following a botched title fight this past weekend at UFC Fight Night 169.
Cejudo’s former rival, Joseph Benavidez, came up short in capturing the vacant flyweight championship as he was knocked out by Deiveson Figueiredo, who was ineligible to win the title after he missed weight ahead of the main event clash.
Back in 2018, there were speculations that the Nevada-based promotion was planning to remove the flyweight class but Cejudo came to the rescue and saved the division from the brink of its demise.
The Olympic gold medalist pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the UFC as he narrowly defeated the greatest flyweight of all-time in Demetrious Johnson, who was later on sent to ONE Championship in the first ever MMA trade in the history.
Returning
With the uncertainty currently surrounding the 125-pound class, ‘Triple C’ has told Dana White he is willing to return to his former division and vows to make it great again.
”Dana White, let’s keep the flyweight division great! #2020 #ilovetrump I’m coming back down to take all their headsheads! Forever Triple C #bendtheknee,” Cejudo tweeted after UFC Norfolk.
In a follow up tweet, he said he wants to fight Benavidez and Figueiredo on the same night for the flyweight belt.
”Why don’t you line them both up, Dana?. Ill be the co-main and main event in the same night! I’ll beat the brakes out of both these ugly detached Siamese twins #andstill4ever.”
Title Defence
Cejudo last saw action in June 2018, when he defeated Marlon Moraes at UFC 238 to capture his second UFC gold and joined the ranks of Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, and Amanda Nunes as the only fighters to hold different belts simultaneously.
He needed to sit out for the rest of 2019 due to shoulder injury but is now scheduled to return this May to defend his bantamweight title.
The promotion booked him against Jose Aldo to headline the UFC 250 fight card in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
For this fight, Cejudo said, “Triple C is gonna be serving GOAT! On May 9th, Jo Baldo(Aldo), I’m gonna be serving GOAT.”
