Mixed martial arts fans are hoping Conor McGregor will step in as late replacement for Khabib Nurmagomedov at the UFC 249 headlining bout.
This after the defending lightweight champion announced he is officially out of the title fight as he decided to stay in quarantine in Russia amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Khabib vs Ferguson matchup is now cancelled for the fifth time and MMA fans think McGregor could save the day for the UFC by taking on ‘El Cucuy’ later this month.
In fact, last January, UFC president Dana White said ‘The Notorious’ is on standby to face either lightweight if the fight does not come to fruition.
“You know Conor, Conor thinks the way Conor thinks, so his thing is, ‘I’ll fight Cowboy, I’ll beat Cowboy and I’ll be ready to fight Khabib at 155 if anything happens,” White claimed.
“Because we’re going into Khabib-Tony again, you know what I mean, so in Conor’s mind, Conor would be ready for that fight.”
With Khabib out of the equation, McGregor, the UFC’s biggest draw, will be a massive addition to the April 18 fight card.
Conor McGregor made a sensational Octagon return last January and defeated Donald Cerrone via 40-second knockout.
Do you think the UFC should book McGregor and Ferguson for interim title fight at UFC 249?
