Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach Dillon Danis is confident of Conor McGregor’s chances at UFC 246 if the main event fight goes to the floor.
McGregor, who formerly holds the featherweight and lightweight titles, will be returning to action on January 18 to face Donald Cerrone in a welterweight clash.
‘The Notorious’ will try to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, where he was submitted in the fourth round via neck crank.
Winless since 2016, McGregor will try to improve his 21-4 MMA record as he eyes to punch his way back to title-contention.
His last win came more than three years ago, when he defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 by way of technical knockout while all of his four losses came by way of submission.
This is why some MMA fans are worried about McGregor against Cerrone, who has 17 submission victories in 36 wins.
But for McGregor’s BJJ coach, it should not be a thing of concern.
Another Level
In an interview with The Shcmo on Wednesday, the Bellator MMA star said McGregor’s ground game is on a different level going into his fight with ‘Cowboy.
“Conor’s always been prepared, man,” Danis stressed, (transcript from MMA Junkie).
“Conor’s been one of the best jiu-jitsu guys that I’ve ever rolled with, like MMA-wise since I started training with him. His jiu-jitsu is on another level, and it always has been.
“I think people just underestimate him for some reason, but if it does go to the ground, they’ll see.”
“They’ll see how good he is.”
Danis rose to fame when he became part of Team McGregor in 2016 as the Straight Blast Gym hired his service to help Conor enhance his ground game.
Unluckily, the training did not bear fruits as McGregor suffered another submission loss in October 2018.
Best Ever
McGregor has showed off his jacked up physique ahead of UFC 246, with some fans fearing he might gas out if the fight goes the distance.
But for his long time coach, John Kavanagh, McGregor is in his best version to date, assuring fans that they are in for a real treat when the Irishman steps into the cage.
“Jan 1st, last heavy spar today before going to Vegas. Can honestly say this is the best i’ve seen him and i wasn’t sure that was possible to do 6 months ago. You guys are in for a real treat, i’m just glad to have a good seat! UFC246”
