Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ll know that Irish UFC superstar Conor McGregor once again shook up the world with a controversial loss last weekend – when his tibia shattered at the end of the very first round of his main event scrap with Dustin Poirier.
The fight was called there and then by referee Herb Dean, who had no choice but to listen to the ringside doctor’s orders and prevent any further damage – much to McGregor’s disgust, who would have happily tried to continue with a disfigured limb.
After the weekend’s events, McGregor took to social media to address his critics, citing that an already weakened ankle was the downfall of his success. As expected however, many refused to believe the Notorious One, instead insisting that he was making excuses up for his third loss in his last five outings.
McGregor took to Twitter in the early hours of this morning to prove his point, releasing a flurry of photographs of himself tending to his already dodgy ankle:
…and of course he hit out at doubters in vintage Mac style:
“I was injured going into the fight…I had multiple stress fractures in the shin bone above the ankle, and then I had trouble with the ankle anyway throughout the years of fighting all the time,” McGregor also said in an explanation for his loss, adding; “I also was wrapping my ankle every training session.”
A smiling and humbled McGregor also uploaded a video of him cruising the streets of California on an electric mobility scooter today, talking about the loss, his surgery and his adoration for his fans.
“I love you all guys, I love the bones of you all,
“I’m just extremely grateful for every single on of you, and I’m motivated to go and do this.”
Poirier will now go on to fight for the Lightweight strap against Charles Oliveira, while McGregor is forced to watch on the side-lines and rest up.
Although UFC President Dana White has insisted the two must ‘run it back’ this game changes pretty quickly, and no-one knows what is next for the Notorious One…and many speculate he may never return to the UFC after this one.
