Conor McGregor mocks Tony Ferguson after he made weight for his championship bout at the postponed UFC 249 fight card.
The number one lightweight contender was scheduled to meet Justin Gaethje in the main event of the April 18 card, with the interim title up for grabs.
However, the UFC has decided to postpone the pay-per-view event and its upcoming MMA shows due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the title bout being canceled, Ferguson still stepped on the scale on Friday and weighed in 155 pounds in an effort to show his ‘champ mentality’ and prove that he is the real king of the lightweight class.
In three weeks, the American fighter will have to cut weight anew as his interim title clash with Gaethje has been moved to headline the stacked May 9 fight card, which will also feature Henry Cejudo vs Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight strap and Amanda Nunes vs Felicia Spencer for the women’s featherweight championship.
Committed
In an interview with ESPN, Ferguson said the weight cut made sense as he sees it as a huge win in a competition against himself.
“It wasn’t just for me — it was for my team, man, and my sponsors and obviously for my family. And just the commitment to myself to follow through with the weight cut. … To me that says a lot more for my stock,” he said.
“Saying that you know what, ‘I’m gonna make weight; I’m not gonna miss weight.’ I have what it takes mentally to go through this fight camp. It’s gonna be awesome, dude. It was such a great experience.”
He added: “I’ve been dong the exact same s—. Everybody has been quarantined now, but I’m still living the same life.”
“I’m still doing my thing, which is training and bettering myself every single day. My growth factor is f—ing huge right now, pardon my language. Literally, I feel great.
“For me to make weight and Justin Gaethje not to make weight, that’s a chalk line right there. That’s a chalk line versus any opponent I have.”
“Any person that would make championship weight today was the smart one that’s gonna compete on that card, that’s still competing.”
Not A Fan
But Conor McGregor, who is eyeing to compete for the lightweight title this year, is not a fan of Ferguson’s insane move.
‘The Notorious’ took to Twitter and told ‘El Cucuy’ he will be absolutely beaten when they meet in a future fight.
“Congrats on an excellent victory @TonyFergusonXT!! Now let’s have the other guy on the scale please,” McGregor wrote.
“Hahahahah. You will be beat to the absolute nucleus pulposus when I get you, kid.”
