Conor McGregor’s long time coach, John Kavanagh, has provided an update on the Irishman’s preparation for his upcoming mixed martial arts return.
Set to end a year of fighting hiatus, ‘The Notorious’ will return to action on January 18 as he is slated to headline UFC 246 pay-per-view event opposite Donald Cerrone.
McGregor is looking to score his first MMA win in three years, with UFC president Dana White saying the fight against Cerrone will be crucial on the revival of his fighting career.
McGregor’s return will be welcomed with more excitement by MMA fans as he will be competing at 170 pounds for the first time since 2016.
The Irishman has showed off his bulked up physique ahead of his return while his coach is claiming fans will see the best version of McGregor later this month.
Huge Treat
In a recent Twitter post, the Straight Blast Gym coach assured MMA fans that McGregor will give them a huge treat in Las Vegas.
“Jan 1st, last heavy spar today before going to Vegas. Can honestly say this is the best I’ve seen him and I wasn’t sure that was possible to do six months ago.
“You guys are in for a real treat, I’m just glad to have a good seat!” Kavanagh wrote.
While Kavanagh is confident of McGregor’s skills, some fans are fearing he would gas out against ‘Cowboy’ after gaining more muscles.
Following his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018, McGregor has been rumuored to part ways with Kavanagh.
The SBG coach said McGregor has to convince him first before helping him prepare for his return.
“Well, he would certainly have to convince me to go again.”
“Yeah, I love him. I love the whole journey we’ve had, but I’d need a good ‘why.'”
“It might be Diaz again because he promised that fight. It might be a rematch with Khabib.”
“But if it was just: ‘Well, they want me to fight that guy’ I think I’d say, ‘I wish you the best.'”
“But he’ll probably call me tomorrow and say: ‘What did you say that for? I’m fighting in March.’ So I don’t know.”
But Kavanagh has credited ‘The Notorious’ for his success in the sport.
“Training MMA is fun but training for professional fighting is very, very tough.”
“It’s very tough on the body. Usually, your motivation for those things is to win a world title or to make some money; and he’s done those things.”
