Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will have the chance to reassert his mastery over Gennadiy Golovkin as they are reportedly set to meet in a trilogy fight this fall.
The boxing rivals first fought to a contentious split draw in September 2017, which many fans believed was won by Golovkin, before the Mexican secured a majority decision win in the following year.
Since these back-to-back instant classics, Canelo has scored three straight victories including a unanimous decision win against Daniel Jacobs to capture the IBF middleweight title and a knockout of Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight title.
Meanwhile, the 38-year old boxer has returned to the win column with a finish of Steve Rolls before seizing the vacant IBF and IBO middleweight belts by outpointing Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
Now a recent report from The Athletic’s Lance Pugmire said the much-awaited third instalment to their rivalry is expected to happen this September.

After over 12 months of attempting to book the matchup, the bitter rivals have reportedly agreed to fight for the third time in a titanic clash that will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Texas on September 12.
The Mexican champion was scheduled to take on Billy Joe Saunders this May in Las Vegas, but the fight is already moved to a later date before its official announcement due to the increasing threats brought by the coronavirus pandemic.
‘Canelo’ has expressed his interest in fighting British challenger, however, reports say he could go straight to GGG in September if the planned fight in June does not materialize.
Before the trilogy fight happens, Golovkin also needs to win a tune up fight first as he is scheduled to defend his middleweight belt against mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremet on June 6 in California.
The fight was originally set for March 28 but the Kazakhstan native reportedly sustained a right calf injury in training last month.
Not A Threat
Alvarez, who was hailed as the 2019’s Fighter of the Year, is confident he will come out with another win should they meet in the trilogy bout as he doesn’t see GGG as a real threat.
“It’s really not a challenge to me. We’ve fought 24 rounds and I beat him. It’s really not a challenge for me, but if it represents business, why not?” Canelo previously claimed.
He also mentioned in a separate interview: “I am the fighter to beat, the one everyone wants to face. Since he fought with me, Golovkin, what has he done? He hasn’t done anything.”
“I already talked to [Golden Boy Promotions]. If they want me to fight with him, the only thing he represents is some business.”
