WWE star Becky Lynch is confident of Conor McGregor’s chances against Khabib Nurmagomedov in a potential rematch.
The lightweight rivals first met in the main event of UFC 229 in October 2018, with Nurmagomedov eking out a fourth-round submission victory for his 27th consecutive win.
Rewriting the history, the lightweight fight shattered previous pay-per-view records as it grossed 2.4 million buys – the highest ever in the UFC – but was overshadowed by an ugly post-fight melee.
15 months since the historic night, the Irishman returned to action and made it clear he is not yet out of the title picture.
McGregor essayed an emphatic 40-second finish of Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 last month to become the only fighter to score a knockout win across the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight classes.
His star power once again came to play as he helped ESPN breached past the 7 million-mark in terms of paid subscribers, following his welterweight clash with ‘Cowboy.’
Next Fight
While McGregor is being linked to higher profile fights at 170 pounds, the UFC president revealed the rematch with Khabib is the next fight to make for the company’s biggest draw.
“This is a massive fight with global appeal,” White insisted.
“Do I want Conor to fight three times this year? Sure. Fight Masvidal? Sure. But you gotta do what makes sense.”
“Khabib vs. Conor is big for their legacies and the sport.”
“Conor was saying going into the Khabib fight … he had lots of personal stuff, some self-inflicted, but he’s been obsessed with getting that rematch. He knows he wasn’t 100% right.”
“When you look at this with Khabib … this kid’s legacy, [a record of] 28-0 in this sport is tough to do. He’s a world champion.”
“It makes sense for the 155-pound title. Masvidal doesn’t have a title. Conor wants the BMF, but [Masvidal] doesn’t have a world championship.”
“Khabib is the fight to make.”
Different Story
Nothing is cast in stone yet but fellow Irish star and WWE champion Becky Lynch already sees the rematch going McGregor’s way.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, the longest reigning RAW Women’s champion said Conor’s dedication and new game plan will give Khabib the first defeat of his career.
“Conor’s got it. Of course I’m going to say my countryman, he’s got it,” Lynch said.
“He out-struck Khabib in that last fight, and I think he’s been working. You saw it in the last fight, he’s got a new game plan, his head is firmly in it.”
“I think he wins it. I think he’s got that dedication. He backs it up.”
