Anthony Joshua explained why he still remains single as he opened up about the struggle of finding the right balance between his love life and professional boxing career.
The Watford-born boxing superstar, who has a four-year old son, recently told The Sun he is looking for ‘someone to grow with’ but the demands of of the sport has taken a toll on his love life.
“I think you can date and still be a successful sportsman but it’s hard to find a balance and I would have to compromise — which I’ve not felt able to do,” Joshua said.
“My dad never gave me advice about much. But in terms of relationships what I have learnt and what I tell my son is, it would be nice to find a high school sweetheart and to grow together because as you get older you get set in your ways.”
Compromise
The two-time unified heavyweight champion admitted it would be difficult for him to find the perfect match as it would require him to sacrifice his time in training.
“For me to have a relationship now means I would have to compromise and change my ways and I don’t know how easy that would be for me to do,” Joshua said.
“So I do date but I don’t get to the stage where I actually put anyone into that position.”
“I don’t have a girlfriend and I haven’t had one for a while. But as I get older I do think it would be nice to have someone, someone to grow with as well — but I honestly haven’t found anyone.”
Title Defence
Joshua reclaimed the WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO titles in December 2019 to become a two-time unified heavyweight champion, following a huge upset loss to Andy Ruiz Jr earlier last year.
Asked about a potential fight with heavyweight legend Mike Tyson, who is set for a sensational boxing return, AJ said: “With all due respect, I wouldn’t [fight Tyson]. Even if I fought Iron Mike and beat him, I think I’d be the only one cheering.”
“People would boo. He is a legend. He is the greatest boxer of the modern era. There are only two recognized champions the world knows of, [Muhammad] Ali and Mike Tyson, the most recognized faces in the world when it comes to boxing.”
For his title-defence bid, Joshua will take on Bulgaria’s Kubrat Pulev on July 25 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as per his promoter, Eddie Hearn.
