Anthony Joshua has revealed he isn’t worried about giving up a world heavyweight title, and says he would win it back again.
Joshua recently regained his WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts in his rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia on December 7.
He suffered a shock defeat to the Mexican-American underdog earlier in the year, but dominated his overweight opponent the second time around to set the record straight.
‘Let’s Rock and Roll’
And AJ was quickly ordered to defend his titles by the IBF and WBO.
The WBO gave the British superstar 180 days to defend his title against mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk, while the IBF made a similar demand with Kubrat Pulev.
Joshua didn’t shy away from the orders at the time, and was quick to confirm his willingness to fight both contenders.
When asked about the WBO’s orders, Joshua replied swiftly: “In 180 days? Let’s rock and roll mate.”
“No problem.”
Not Worried
And boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is now working tirelessly to ensure that both title defence obligations can be fulfilled in the coming year.
But AJ is relaxed about the situation, and isn’t upset about the prospect of giving up one of his titles.
When asked about the possibility of being stripped of his WBO or IBF belt, Joshua told Sky Sports: “I always said the belts do not represent me,”
“I will stand as a champion, even if I have to give one up.”
The Watford-born superstar also expressed his confidence that should the situation arise, he would regain the title in the future.
He continued: “It would give me an opportunity to face another world champion – I’ve beaten four world champions on my record now.”
“If I give up a belt it creates more history and entertainment. If I have to, I’ll give it away – but I’ll get it back again.”
The Next Challenge
Pulev is the forerunner to be Joshua’s first challenger, with a fight expected in April or May, while Usyk has been offered an alternative fight with Derek Chisora.
Joshua also spoke out about the excitement of defending the world heavyweight title in Britain.
When asked about London as the potential venue, he said: “I’d like that. I’m cool with that,”
“I still find it weird that we talk about Wembley and Tottenham!”
“I asked Eddie where we will fight next if Wembley isn’t available, and he said Tottenham. I haven’t been to Tottenham’s ground yet.”
